End of Year 2019

Below is my top 10 movies of 2019 in which I reviewed on the site and really enjoyed.

Honourable Mentions: Rise of Skywalker, Zombieland: Double Tap, Terminator: Dark Fate, Gemini Man, El Camino, Hustlers, Fast & Furious: Hobbs & Shaw, Alita: Battle Angel, Glass and Bumblebee.

P.S. The Marvel Cinematic Universe movies are not included in this top 10.

10. Joker
Todd Philips did well with this picture and the only reason why it was number 10 for me was due to the direction it took.  I wasn't really a fan although I really enjoyed it.  A different spin on the character we all know yet never seen before and it was highly favoured.  What I will say, in which I thought was brilliant, we will never really know what was real and what was Arthur's imagination throughout the entirety of the movie. Well done sir.

9. Doctor Sleep
I never read the two books, The Shining or Doctor Sleep but I was aware this was a sequel to a film I've never watched.  Of course I watched it in time for this and frankly, although the two movies are very different, I still loved this one and the lore built up. Would be interesting if there was any other sequels to be drafted and filmed because I'd definitely watch it.  The little girl in this was excellent.

8. Toy Story 4
They should have quit after the third one, but then why would this be on my list from that statement, because Toy Story 4 not only hit the ball out of the park, the story was great, the acting was great and the animation was phenomenal.  You'd think they'd run out of ideas and/or characters and they just keep doing it and it just keeps getting better.  3 hit me more emotionally, but this one was just superb.

7. Angel Has Fallen
I can't say why I watched this movie other than being curious at the trailer as the second one (London Has Fallen) was lame.  But considering I really liked Olympus Has Fallen, I have this a chance and I'm glad I did.  Action and fun with some funny moments.  This film was not full and I had a great time with it when I was not expecting to.  I hope Gerard has some more left in him.

6. Once Upon a Time in Hollywood
Tarantino is wild and this is why we love him.  He has literally penned a fairytale movie with real life events dotted throughout that not only sheds a little light on what has happened in real life, but to add his Tarantino twist with his excellently scripted screenplay, dialogue and acting.  Brad Pitt and Leonardo DiCaprio were just excellent and the last act was nothing short of amazing to watch.  Well done sir.

5. Blue Story
I was never going to watch this for reasons I explained in my review, but I am happy that I did because not only was it a different type of movie I have never seen, it was also London-based and hit very close to home for me.  I would have loved the director to have done a bit more with his message but he did a great job nonetheless.  Some real great moments I could relate to, just hope the message was received.

4. IT: Chapter II
Another sequel which hit the mark for me.  Funny in places, creepy and everything I liked from the first one.  Lightening didn't strike twice in a bottle though as there were some bits that didn't work for me near the end but other than that, IT is an entity that is scary, horrific and Bill plays him soo well, it is simply great to have him back in the role doing what he does best, with those eyes.

3. Knives Out
Rhian Johnson upset a few people when he did The Last Jedi.  Personally, I was fine with it and enjoyed it.  I think he is a great director having seen Looper and loved it and this film is beyond great.  The screenplay, the characters, the murder mystery somewhat turned onto it's head with a twist.  And the film is funny as hell with superb acting from the main cast members. Brilliant.

2. John Wick 3: Parabellum
This movie only came second on my list because of it's predecessors and how great all movies have been this far and how this one went above and beyond the prequels.  Keanu Reeves is Neo. Keanu Reeves is John Wick.  Just when you thought they couldn't get any brutal or inventive with the kills, they did.  And Halle Berry was an excellent addition.

1. Dolemite is my Name
I wasn't sure if I was going to put this as my number 1 movie as I saw a lot of great movies of last year. However, I had such a great time with this film that it almost brought me to tears at it's close and it also had a great message behind it that struck me.  I'm just hoping this is a nice comeback for Eddie Murphy and he becomes that star he once was and always has been.
